Emerging Leaders

The Australia India Institute launched the Emerging Leaders’ Fellowship program in mid-2011. The program was conceived as a way of bringing outstanding mid-career Indian professionals to Australia to continue their research in an area of international significance and to engage with Australian academics, professionals and the wider Australian community.

The program was widely advertised throughout India and attracted an enthusiastic response from highly skilled and impressive candidates from a variety of disciplines including the media, academia, the civil service and public life.

While in the Australia, the fellows were based at the Institute’s headquarters in Melbourne for up to eight weeks. Under the program, each fellow delivered a public lecture on a subject of bilateral or international significance and produced a substantial paper which the Institute undertook to publish. As well as spending time at the Institute and at the University of Melbourne, fellows also travelled interstate to engage with counterparts in other parts of Australia and develop relationships that deepened knowledge exchange and furthered Australia-India cooperation in their area of research.
