Jim Masselos is an honorary reader in history at the University of Sydney and a Fellow of the Australian Academy for the Humanities. He completed a BA (Hons) in History at the University of Sydney and then went on to do a PhD at the Heras Institute for Indian History and Culture, St Xavier’s College in the University of Bombay on a Government of India scholarship, and then a Fellowship under the British Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan.
He returned to lecture Indian History at the University of Sydney and retired from a Readership in History in 2001. He was a foundation member of the South Asian Studies Association of Australia and New Zealand, was an early member of the editorial board of South Asia, serving as Reviews Editor, and successively secretary and then President of the Association, a position to which he returned in the 1990s. He has served as a council member of the Asian Studies Association of Australia, the Centre for Asian Studies (later the Research Institute for Asia and the Pacific) at the University of Sydney, and the Asian Arts Society of Australia.
