The early Mughal emperors from Babur onwards were keen devotees of Persian literature and collectors of the prestigious books copied, illustrated and widely disseminated beyond the borders of Iran. Persian poets and painters were increasingly drawn to India, where there were rich rewards and attractive working conditions. This was especially so during the reign of emperor Akbar (1556-1605) when the Mughal library and painting studio was significantly expanded.

The Jagriti Yatra is an ambitious annual train journey taking 400 highly motivated Indian youth on an 18 day circumnavigation of India. The Yatra attempts to awaken the spirit of social and economic entrepreneurship in young Indian adults, as well as a small number of international participants, by exposing them to prolific social entrepreneurs that demonstrate the power of enterprise-led growth in India. As the specially chartered train covers more than 9000km through throbbing cities and sleepy villages, participants drawn from all over India debate pressing issues in development and incubate ideas for social enterprises.

Food security is intrinsically linked to the goals of human security and political stability. The manner in which states choose to tackle food insecurity at home – e.g. through export/import mechanisms, social safety nets, the domestic use of scarce natural resources such as land and water, or by purchasing foreign agricultural land to grow food for domestic consumption etc. – may also have direct implications for strategic and human security concerns outside their borders.

Australia’s largest bilateral science research collaboration fund is with India. The Australia India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF) was established in 2006 and received increased funding in 2009. The presentation will consider the historico –political context for the establishment of the Fund, the grants awarded for the first three years and assess the Fund’s impact and future, drawing on the experience of a particular funded project.
