Gareth Evans
Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AO QC is Chancellor of the Australian National University (http://www.aii.unimelb.edu.au/people/distinguished-fellows/gareth-evans January 2010), a Professorial Fellow at The University of Melbourne (since July 2009), and President Emeritus of the Brussels-based International Crisis Group (Crisis Group), the independent global independent global conflict prevention and resolution organisation of which he was President and Chief Executive Officer from January 2000 to June 2009. He has co-chaired two major International Commissions, on Intervention and State Sovereignty (2000-01) and on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (2008-10). Read more.
Brian Stoddart
Emeritus Professor Brian Stoddart concluded his formal academic career by serving as Vice-Chancellor and President of La Trobe University. He took his first two degrees at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand where he developed his interests in India, then took a PhD from the University of Western Australia writing on nationalist politics in South India. After publishing in that field he became an international pioneer in the study of sports history and culture, as well as moving into senior university management positions. His Saturday Afternoon Fever: Sport in the Australian Culture is still regarded as the influential work in the field while his work on sport in the British Empire and after, especially that on cricket in the Caribbean, is widely cited. That work also focused heavily on developments in the Asian areas of the British Empire, most notably India where he has worked with several scholars to promote the field successfully. Read more.
Robin Jeffrey
Professor Robin Jeffrey is Visiting Research Professor at the Institute of South Asian Studies and Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore. Professor Jeffrey was educated at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada (BA, 1967) and the University of Sussex in the UK (D.Phil., 1973). He first worked as a journalist on the Daily Colonist in Victoria, BC (1963-7). He taught school in Chandigarh in North India for the Regional Institute of English and the Canadian University Service Overseas (CUSO) from 1967-9 before doing a doctorate in modern Indian history at Sussex. He went to the ANU as a research fellow from 1973-8 and taught in the Politics Program at La Trobe University in Melbourne from 1979-2005. Read more
John Webb
Professor John Webb OAM established the Australia India Institute at the University of Melbourne and was its Acting Director and Deputy Director. Before this Professor Webb was based at the Australian High Commission in New Delhi (2005 to early 2008) as Counsellor (Education, Science and Training) with responsibilities that also included Nepal and Pakistan. A Fulbright Fellow, he holds postgraduate qualifications in science ( Ph. D., California Institute of Technology and B.Sc. Hons. and the University Medal, University of Sydney) and education (Diploma of Education, Murdoch University) and has consulted widely on university development in Asia. He has been a member of the Australian National Commission for UNESCO and a founding member of UNESCO’s International Advisory Board for Basic Sciences. Read more
