Meet Haripriya Rangan, our new Director for Research and Academic Programmes

The Australia India Institute (Aii) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Haripriya Rangan as its new Director of Research and Academic Programmes.

Professor Craig Jeffrey, Director of the Aii, said the recently established position is the latest move by the Aii to strengthen its presence in research and academic programs.

“The Aii is keen to make its mark as one of the world’s leading centre’s for studying India. This is a process that will take time, but I’m certain Priya’s appointment is a crucial step in making this vision a reality,” Jeffrey said.

Prior to her appointment, Dr. Rangan was Associate Professor of Geography and Environmental Science at Monash University. Her research has focused on environmental movements in India, natural resource and landscape management in South Africa, India and Australia, and environmental history of the Indian Ocean world.

Her research has been funded by several competitive grants from the Australian Research Council and the National Science Foundation USA.

“It’s an exciting time to join the Australia India Institute and build a larger, vibrant, and collaborative network between researchers and graduate students working on India from different perspectives,” she said.

“There is tremendous opportunity to mould innovative engagement between Australian and Indian universities, research institutions and community organisations.”

“There are some exciting projects in the works at the Institute that will set the Aii on course to become a leading information resource hub and incubator for transdisciplinary research and collaboration between the education, business, and governance sectors of both countries,” Rangan said.

She will be presenting the first talk in the Institute’s flagship lecture series, Keywords for India.
