Professor Srila Roy from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, delighted an audience of more than 100 on the evening of September 4 with a Keyword Lecture on ‘Feminism’.
Professor Roy took listeners on a journey through the development of Indian feminism over the past 40 years, highlighting its historical roots and internal cleavages, and reflecting on contemporary challenges and opportunities.
In a question and answer session chaired by Dr Dolly Kikon from the University of Melbourne, Professor Roy was quizzed about the language of feminism in India, activism of marginal women who might not identify as feminists, and how women’s movements could become a force in electoral politics.
